Shinji seems to love nature and animals, as seen when he was walking with his grandfather in a forest and rescued a Tanuki from a trap.

One day while being in the forest with his grandfather, Shinji saw a tanuki in a trap and he and his grandfather released him from it.
Later, Shinji was with his parents when they got in a car accident and they died.
