Okubo (大久保 Ōkubo?) is one of Kuwabara's friends, a member of his gang and an ally of Yusuke Urameshi.
Appearance[]
Okubo is a tough street kid with black hair and his hair styled in the 50s greaser style of Kuwabara's. He was rather heavyset.
Personality[]
Okubo is the most sympathetic of the group, as despite being a delinquent, he works hard for the sake of his family. He seems to be the weakest of the group, as Kuwabara describes him as rarely hitting and usually getting beat up (though he may have been lying for Okubo's sake), but he is shown successfully putting an opponent in a headlock after Eikichi was saved in the manga.
Synopsis[]
Spirit Detective Saga[]
Strangely, in the manga, when Kuwabara's gang first appeared in the manga, Okubo and Sawamura appeared, but Kirishima was strangely absent but appeared when Kuwabara was extorted by Sakamoto (though there were a few generic members who never appeared again)[1].
Kirishima is not frequently featured in the series, but when he is, he is portrayed as being very loyal to and respectful of Kuwabara. He seems to be the most impulsive and reckless, and is annoyed or excited much more easily than the others.
Along with the rest of his gang, he attempts to save Keiko Yukimura from rival gangsters, but was knocked out by their leader in the ensuing street brawl. He was also badly injured by a group of half breed demons in the manga who were masquerading as members of a rival school (while also impersonating Yusuke and Kuwabara). In both cases, Yusuke and Kuwabara avenge their defeats.
Chapter Black Saga[]
In Episode 67, a month has passed after the Dark Tournament competition and all was back to normal. Kuwabara's Gang appeared when Yusuke and Kuwabara are up to their normal antics at Sarayashiki, where Botan was also present, disguised as a female student.
The attack of Seaman
Some episodes later, Yusuke and Kuwabara part ways after the latter decides to attend a concert with his friends. In fact, Kuwabara and the whole gang are great fans of the heavy metal band, Megallica and were waiting for a whole year for this concert. After leaving the stadium where the concert was held, it started to heavily rain. Sawamura was suddenly abducted and Kuwabara defended Kirishima from a fatal attack from a mysterious psychic.
In fact, Kuwabara is unable to access his powers during his fight against Kiyoshi Mitarai (aka Seaman), a human teenager gifted with the ability to create indestructible monsters made of water.
Faced with the possible death of his friends, Kuwabara's powers awaken and he gains the power to slice through dimensional barriers with the powerful Dimension Sword. With it, he slices through the monster and wounds Seaman, saving himself and his friends. Out of kindness, Kuwabara also spares the life of Seaman, causing the teenager to turn good.
Then, Sarayashiki's number-one delinquent carried all the troupe and his enemy on his back, till Yusuke and Botan found them all.
The morning after, at Yusuke's apartment, all of Kuwabara's Gang's memories of the event were erased, so they wouldn't be burdened with it by the darker truths involving Sensui and then Okubo, Kirishima and Sawamura were sent back home.
All or Nothing[]
In this OVA special, Kirishima and all of Kuwabara's Gang make a cameo appearance.
Trivia[]
- Okubo's last test score before a physical science test that Mr. Akashi gave in episode 3 turned out to be 39%.
- Okubo retained his name in the English dub of the TV series unlike Kirishima and Sawamura, who were renamed Miyamoto and Komada respectively.
