The Mafuukan (魔封環, Ma Fū Kan, lit. Demon Seal Ring), also known as Mafuuken/Mafukan in the FUNimation dub, is the most powerful defensive spell in all creation. It is also Spirit World's best line of defense and its' last.
Koenma's pacifier is the vehicle for this technique; the strongest defensive spell in all of Spirit World. When released, this technique is supposed to create a Barrier net that is far stronger than the one that separated Human World from Demon World during Great King Enma's rule.
Description[]
The Mafuukan is a swell of pure Spirit Energy, often focused in a relic. It also has other uses, including the ability to restore life to the deceased. In the case of an example seen in the storyline, it is contained in Koenma's pacifier, and had been storing his energy for centuries. While such an ability can be used at any time, it is reserved for grave and catastrophic situations and darker periods of existence. This ability takes a long time, possibly centuries, before being performed another time due to Koenma needing to store an immense volume of energy within his pacifier for it to work to its' full extent.
Etymology[]

- There is a pun here, in that "Kan", when written as 看 (kan) as part of 看守 [かんしゅ] (kanshu), means "jailer". If Koenma had been able to successfully use this technique against Shinobu Sensui, he would have been Sensui's eternal jailer.
History[]
Koenma's technique was first used in Episode 87. Here, Koenma was forced to use it against Shinobu Sensui, the renegade Spirit Detective, but to no avail. Due to Koenma using a portion of the stored energy to resurrect Tsukihito Amanuma, it was greatly weakened, and the spell was easily crushed by Sensui.

Specializing in demons, the Mafuukan can even trap S Class demons, like Yomi and Mukuro, with ease. However, Sensui managed to overpower and dispel it. This was largely because Koenma used a significant amount of his pacifier's Spirit Energy to revive Gamemaster, an action which Sensui had foreseen. Additionally, because the spell specializes in trapping demons specifically, it was not designed to contain Sensui's Sacred Energy. Though it could still potentially trap Sacred Energy users, as it took Sensui a great deal of effort to overcome it, it is not nearly as effective as it would be against an opponent utilizing Demon Energy.
Trivia[]
- Koenma's Mafuukan failed to seal Sensui, similar to how the Mafuba (Evil Containment Wave) technique used against King Piccolo and Zamasu from Dragon Ball failed.
