The Koorime (氷女 Kōrime?) or Ice-Apparitions, are a race of "Ice Maidens" who live on the floating island Hyouga.
Characteristics[]
The Ice Maidens, as per their names, are a species of all-female apparitions who reside in their floating home, living in isolation and forbidding males, believing their kind brings nothing but disasters. Differing from most, their species are noted as having an infinite lifespan, conceiving a child each 100 years through parthenogenesis. However, if an Ice Maiden mated with a male (most often another male apparition, unknown if a human is included in this), during their reproductive cycle, then that child would be born a male, who would take after their father rather than their mother, which is the reason their child ends up being vicious and ruthless. Among them, Hina, who mated with a male fire apparition, birthed the twins Hiei and Yukina, the former inherited a resistance to fire and ice, whereas the latter was born a pure Ice Maiden.

Trivia[]
- It has been said ice apparitions that have male children are often killed by them as they always take after their father's personality traits (When the chapter explaining this fact is shown in Shonen Jump, it is changed to say that they don't survive the birthing instead). This is proven in the anime, as Hina was still alive when Hiei was cast out, but committed suicide in grief, leaving Yukina to Rui.
- Hiei has stated that Koorime have their hearts figuratively and quite literally frozen over. For this reason, he went against wiping them out as they are eternally in a state worse than death.
- It is unknown whether humans and Koorime can have children together.
- The Koorime race is inspired by yōkai called Yuki-onna (雪女, yuki-onna), female spirits who were forever cold and forbidden to marry human men.
- Their crystal tears are noted to suck up negative feelings; hence why Hiei and Mukuro value the crystals so much, as it softened their hearts.
- Hiei once pointed out that his jewel should be "blazing" with his aura, showing that they are capable of taking on the same properties as their owner.
