Appearance[]

Jorge is an ordinary sized Polo Blue ogre with long, balding platinum blond hair. He has one horn on his forehead and usually wears a brown loincloth with black stripes around his waist.

Personality[]

Jorge is usually outspoken and laid-back. He is always trying to help Koenma and points out that Koenma should have more faith in Yusuke and the others. Unlike Koenma, Jorge is more upbeat, down-to-earth, and has faith that Yusuke can always pull through somehow, despite the fact that, as an anime-exclusive character, the two rarely interact. Jorge is noticeably unsatisfied with his job, and on more than one occasion has tried to pursue his dream of being an announcer or singer. Still, Jorge usually takes the brunt of Koenma's frustration (in one instance, Koenma mentioned to wanting to give Jorge a lobotomy) with minimal resistance, occasionally playing similar tricks on Koenma (such as stealing the steamed crab he tricked Koenma into putting down).

From the beginning, Jorge is always seen with Koenma either bringing him paperwork or helping Koenma catch up on his unfinished work. Later on, he's seen as Koenma's assistant during the following arcs. He mostly serves as comic relief or the "voice of reason" for Koenma himself.

During the Chapter Black saga, Jorge and Koenma's relationship improves somewhat. Koenma starts referring to Jorge by name, and the two become more willing to express concern and fondness for each other.

Spirit Detective Saga[]

During the Four Saint Beasts Saga, he was seen rooting for Yusuke and the others. After Yusuke and Kazuma Kuwabara beat the Toguro Brothers, he was the one who brought Koenma the tape revealing they had faked their deaths in the fight.

Dark Tournament Saga[]

Jorge and Koenma at the Dark Tournament

Jorge accompanies Koenma to the Dark Tournament competition and for the first part he sat with Koenma in his team owner's booth. Later, during the finals, he tries to become an announcer with Koto but was immediately turned down. It was here where he revealed his wish to become a singer, only for Koenma to recommend a frontal lobotomy.

Chapter Black Saga[]

Despite what could be normal days for a while after the Dark Tournament, it is Jorge who delivers the emergency report that a tunnel to Demon World is emerging in the Human World at an alarming rate to Koenma, which spurs him to send Botan to find Yusuke, albeit at a bad time as the Spirit Detective had been kidnapped. As such, Jorge's and Koenma's hands are full at Spirit World's administration as mission control while Yusuke's team is on the field. Jorge continues to act as Koenma's secretary and right hand man, escorting Kurama when he figures out who is opening the tunnel to Demon World and, to Koenma's chagrin, that he is hiding something from the team, being the info that it is the prior Spirit Detective, Shinobu Sensui, who is opening the tunnel. When Koenma leaves for the living world, Jorge is made the temporary head over the administration.

Three Kings Saga[]

Koenma ep106 (YYH) 1

Koenma disguised as Tuxedo Mask with Jorge and Botan in the Demon World Tournament.

After the awakening of Yusuke's Mazoku atavism and insubordination of Koenma against Spirit World's, and essentially, his father's orders to eliminate Yusuke, Jorge sometimes sneaks out to Koenma's whereabouts to let him in on what is going on back at home. In the anime, when Demon World's three kingdoms are able to make a deal with Spirit World and send for Yusuke, Kurama, and Hiei without resistance, Jorge is the only one who knows and is told by Koenma of his father's secret humiliation to submit to the three kings of Demon World upon their offer simply to uphold his law to the letter.

He later accompanies Koenma and Botan (all in disguise) to the Demon World and once again tries to become an announcer with Koto. This action infuriates Koenma whom reminds him that the demons there would rip them apart if they knew who they were.

In the anime, Koenma and Botan observed the matches of the Demon World Tournament, later joined by Jorge. Though admitting the outcome of the tournament was a favorable one, Koenma berated Yusuke for taking too many chances with the fate of all three worlds. He promptly fired Yusuke from his position as Spirit Detective, who stated that he would have quit anyways. Koenma and Yusuke then parted as friends.

Botan then asked Koenma what to do with all of the "footage". Koenma told her to package it, revealing that the entire anime was a series of clips from the files of Spirit World, and the narrator was the ogre, Jorge.

Epilogue[]

All or Nothing

Kuwabara Kurama (2018 OVA) 1

Kurama, Kuwabara, Koenma and Jorge Saotome in All or Nothing.

Koenma is later taken hostage along with Botan, Jorge and a hundred other spirits when a radical Spirit World religious sect, in an attempt to "purify" the Human World, took over the Gates of Judgment. Unless all demons were removed from the Human World, the sect threatened to not only kill all of the hostages, but also to fire an interdimensional laser at the Human World. Team Urameshi managed to infiltrate the Gates of Judgement and subdued the terrorists. One terrorist explained to Yusuke that in order to stop the laser from firing, he would need to press a specific switch to stop the command. However, in addition to the correct switch, there were two false switches in place. One false switch would detonate the weapon and kill anyone still inside the Gates of Judgment and the other would automatically fire the laser at the Human World. Yusuke ordered everyone to evacuate the Gates while he would decide which switch to press. However, Koenma, Hiei, and Pu remained with him while he deliberated.

Luckily, Yusuke picked the right button and in the final chapter, Koenma was shown stamping papers with his seal.

In the anime, Koenma (toddler form) appears along with Jorge Saotome doing the same scene as in the manga for the final episode credits.

In the Eizou Hakusho OVA, he is seen watching the beginning of the Second Demon World Tournament.

Trivia[]

  • Jorge is one of the most notable anime-only characters in the series.
  • In the Three Kings Saga, it was revealed his name is spelled "Jorge" (not George), as his initials on his paper-thin disguise is J.S.
  • Jorge lives with his mother.
  • Unknowingly, Jorge is considered to be the main narrator of the anime series for both the English and Japanese versions. A little is shown that he is the narrator in Episode 111.
  • Others tend to mistake his name as others which he dislikes, one instance is when Koto mistook his name as "Jorge Watanabe" in Episode 105 of the Japanese Anime.
