Topside is the twenty-eighth and final episode of season 3 of YuYu Hakusho. It aired on August 13, 1994 in Japan and November 26, 2005 in the United States.

Short Summary

Yusuke and his friends return to the surface to the arms of their friends. But all is not well. The Special Defense Force of Great King Enma arrive saying that they must destroy Yusuke once and for all. Could this be the end? How much energy does the Spirit Detective has after his exhausting battle with Sensui?

Detailed Summary

Yusuke's allies waiting for Yusuke and the others in Human World.

Now, the people who had dealings with Sensui face their own epilogues. Doctor, Sniper, Seaman, Gamemaster, Kido, Kaito, and Yanagisawa resume their normal lives. The Special Defense Force confronts a Yusuke who's still with his Mazoku form, along with Koenma, Kurama, Kuwabara, and an unconcious Hiei outside of the cave's entrance, where captain Ootake warns Koenma that his father will be informed of his interference with their other mission. Koenma boldly states that that's fine with him, and tells them to also inform his father of his decision to remain in the Human World for now, seemingly placing himself in temporary exile, until the assassination order on Yusuke is lifted. So the special group decides to flee from Human World.

Then, Kurama and Hiei lay low, keeping an eye on Yusuke. Hiei decides to destroy the Chapter Black videotape. Yusuke asks Kurama to cut his long hair and also his Mazoku markings disappear the very next day. Kuwabara and Keiko return to junior high school life. However, Yusuke is uncomfortable and decides to skip school. He feels unsatisfied that his match with Sensui was interrupted by a mysterious powerful demon who possessed him, and is conflicted over his half-demon nature. Also, Great King Enma is impressed by Koenma's decision to rebel against him but decides that something has to be done regarding Yusuke and the Barrier.

Anime Notes

• This marks the end of the Chapter Black Saga.
• This marks the final appearances of the Sensui Seven, Asato Kido, and Mitsunari Yanagisawa. Yuu Kaito would make a cameo near the beginning of the succeeding arc, but otherwise he plays no further role in the narrative.
• Keiko's friend (the taller one in pigtails) appears briefly talking to Keiko at the episode's end, having last appeared in "Requirements for Lovers". It would be the character's final appearance as well. Her voice here is done by Amanuma's actress Monica Rial instead of Stephanie Nadolny. She does not have dialogue in the original Japanese.
• The fates of Sensui and his allies:
  • Itsuki is keeping Sensui's body preserved, with Sensui's soul unwilling to leave it. Even like this, Itsuki is finally happy to have his beloved Sensui all to himself.
  • Amanuma manages to make friends thanks to his gamer skills.
  • Mitari gains confidence and applies to a good school.
  • Hagiri disappears publicly, but sends his family money every month; implying hes become a true sniper assassin.
  • Kamiya alters his face and changes his name, founding a psychic dojo to teach his medical powers. The future has many saved by this.
  • Toguro, parasitcally attached to Gourmet's corpse, is forever stuck to the Sinning Tree.
