The Special Defense Force is dispatched from the Spirit World to seal the breach. They are also ordered to terminate Yusuke, for he is a genetically inherited half-demon Mazoku species. However, Yusuke discovers his Mazoku nature and awakens. Pu is transported to the lair and transformed into a large blue phoenix. Then, Yusuke and Koenma enter into the breach, making their way toward Sensui and the rest of Yusuke's friends.

Yusuke returns to life via Demonic Atavism (latent DNA of his demonic ancestor) after having been killed by Sensui in "Death of a Spirit Detective", returning as a demon essentially. Pu, as a result of the former's reincarnation, responds by transforming into a larger swan/phoenixesque form of which he stays for the rest of the series.
In the Blu-ray English version, some of the Special Defense Force members have been redubbed from the original:
Saitō, the short bald member, goes from Merk Harbour to Joel McDonald.
Sōrai, the brunette woman, goes from Melissa Ellis to Alexis Tipton.
Ryōhi, the blonde woman, goes from Clarine Harp to Stephanie Young.
The taller unnamed member goes from Travis Willingham to Scott Freeman.
