The Death of Genkai is the fifty-second episode of season 2 of YuYu Hakusho. It aired on October 16, 1993 in Japan and May 14, 2003 in the United States.
Fifty years ago, Genkai and Toguro were actually teammates who fought and won their own Dark Tournament, before becoming violently estranged. Yusuke Urameshi arrived just in time to see his teacher slain, and assaulted Toguro in a rage, only to be knocked away by one devastating blow. With the final round of the tournament soon to begin against Team Toguro, Yusuke must find a way to keep that from happening again.

Anime Notes[]
This episode, as is self-evident in the title, marks the death of Genkai. She will not be revived until "Toguro's Wish".
Kuwabara is the only member of Team Urameshi to not have sensed Genkai's passing, though he did sense Younger Toguro's demon energy as the latter powered up to 80% full power.
The ones who contacted Genkai about the Dark Tournament were the Demon Triad in the manga flashback, but the anime version instead shows two generic emissaries; a woman wearing shades and a black cloak and a heavily built giant of a man with shoulder length black hair. The woman is not intended to be Miyuki, given she has a different voice from the latter in both the Japanese (Yoshiko Kamei instead of Ako Mayama) and English versions (Laura Bailey instead of Peggy Paterson), whereas the man does not resemble Gokumonki at all.
