Suzuki's Challenge is the twenty-fifth episode of season 2 of YuYu Hakusho. It aired on October 2, 1993 in Japan and May 12, 2003 in the United States.

Short Summary[]

Kuwabara steps into the ring again to fight against Suzuki, but runs straight into his trap, transporting him again into the old stadium. Genkai steps in next, and defeats Suzuki without wasting any spirit energy.

Detailed Summary[]

In the previous match against Team Uraotogi, Genkai overwhelmed Shishiwakamaru, a demon with many tricks and specialties, but mainly a thirst for power and recognition. Meanwhile, Yusuke recovers from the torturous absorption of Genkai's Spirit Wave Orb with Keiko outside the new stadium, which promises to give him unfathomable power.

While Keiko sits with the unconscious Yusuke, they are attacked by demon thugs but are saved by Chu, Rinku, Touya, and Jin. After Shishiwakamaru's defeat, Onji was the only member left on Team Uraotogi. Kuwabara had been once again chosen to fight by dice throwing, but Onji defeated him easily. The next Team Urameshi Team member selected to fight was Genkai, who tells Onji to stop pretending to be an old man and show who he actually is. Then Onji says the reason he disguised himself as an old one was because he hates aged people. And then he shows to everyone on the stadium his true identity: Suzuki, a narcissist demon with a jester appearance. Before starting the battle, he tells the audience his goal in case of his victory: Kill all old people and everyone who stands against him.

As the fight starts, he attacks Genkai with his move Rainbow Cyclone (レインボーサイクロン, Reinbō Saikuron) which doesn't affect Genkai at all. Then, enraged, he performs the move Body of Steel Muscle Explosion (爆肉鋼体, Bakuniku Kōtai), increasing his physical strength, but Genkai still defeats and humiliates him easily, almost killing him. Team Urameshi has claimed their spot in the Dark Tournament's final round.

At the end of the episode, the members of Team Urameshi and the girls comment about their victory. Genkai leaves the group and meets Younger Toguro, who says he wishes to talk with her later. Genkai agrees and she leaves.

Anime Notes[]

  • Suzuki is renamed Suzuka in the original English dub for merchandising reasons so as not to conflict with the motor company Suzuki. Years later, with the Blu-ray rerelease, his name has been reverted back to Suzuki with subsequent characters saying his name being redubbed to match the alteration. Jeremy Inman also rerecorded most of his dialogue as the character for a more refined performance.

Trivia[]

  • Suzuki's mask is likely a reference to the titular phantom Erik from Phantom of the Opera.
  • Onji's chant as he transforms into Suzuki is Latin, in which he says "Fallaces sunt rerum species tamquam alter idem flamma fumo est!" This translates to "The appearances of things are deceptive, as if the other is the same flame as smoke!"
