Inheritance is the ninth episode of season 4 of YuYu Hakusho. It aired on October 15, 1994 in Japan and January 28, 2006 in the United States.
Short Summary[]
As Raizen is on death's doorstep, he tells Yusuke the story of his lineage. Raizen dies, and Yusuke is left to find a way to stop total war from taking place in Demon World.
Detailed Summary[]
Raizen's hunger has reached its limit. When Yusuke challenges him again, Raizen attacks him in a frenzy. However, he is now too weak to hurt him. Raizen bites Yusuke, who calls him pathetic, snapping Raizen out of it.
Raizen explains that before the barrier was raised, he ate humans without a care, but got wounded in Japan in the 1500s. He broke into a house to hide, only to be confronted by a woman doctor of that era (who turned their blood into cures by ingesting diseased flesh). She treated his wounds and he slept for some time. However, his hunger returned soon. Aware of it, she bared herself to him and warned of the poison in her body. Raizen was captivated by her brazen attitude, eventually leading to the two of them to make love. Raizen left the next day, promising himself he would not eat another human until he saw her again; however, she died in childbirth. He waited for her reincarnation, but realized she was too enlightened to be allowed that. Raizen asks Yusuke a question (What it is depends on the language the show is in), being satisfied with the answer. He explains that siding with Mukuro is the right move (since she wishes for Demon World to stay as it is), as Yomi has sinister plans. With that, Raizen mumbled about his hunger once more before passing away.
Yusuke returns to inform the others of Raizen's passing; he asks Hokushin to take him to see Yomi. At the same time, Mukuro and Yomi realize Raizen has died and are aware that Yusuke is up to something. Now, Yusuke, with a mysterious big bag on his hand and Hokushin at his side, enter the Kingdom of Gandara.

Anime Notes[]
- In the original version, Raizen asked if Yusuke would eat humans; the answer being no, as Yusuke was born human and only awakened his demonic power. Raizen explained that he sees himself as a step in a possible path for Demon evolution, to avoid needing to.
- In the English version, Raizen asks Yusuke if he has ever been in love; Yusuke answers affirmatively. To this, Raizen explains that his suicidal fasting should make some sense; saying "love makes you do stupid things you never regret". He then goes to explain about the stalemate between the Three Kings.
Trivia[]
- It is assumed that Raizen and his lover's child was adopted by whomever helped birth it.
